Health Policy Workshop a Great Success

Category: News and Trainings

On November 9, 2012, Planet MassCONECT Institute for Community Health Program Planning (iCHPP) partnered with the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), and Tufts Aligning Researchers and Communities for Health (ARCH) team, and the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center (Harvard Catalyst), to host a Health Policy Workshop. The event gathered about 65 attendees. Those attending were participants of the iCHPP, participants of ARCH’s Building Your Capacity Program (BYC), and staff from each of the partnering organizations, as well as public health experts, clinicians, and scholars.

One of the goals of the Health Policy Workshop was to increase community capacity to participate in health policy making and help participants bring their advocacy efforts to the next level. The highlight of the day, was when workshop participants put the five-step community health policy approach they learned into action at a mock community hearing about restricting the sale of sugary beverages. All participants took their roles very seriously and this led to a humorous yet informative exercise.

Dr. Clara Savage, Director of Common Pathways (CHNA 8) in Worcester, summarized the spirit of the event by saying, “It is fantastic to have this opportunity. This is the first time we are all coming together to talk about the different types of policy and the process for initiating policy change. We need to continue this conversation – today is just the beginning.”
